BMW 635 CSi (E24) (1982)
The BMW E24 6-Series coupe was introduced in March 1976 as a replacement for the E9 3.0 CS and CSL coupes, and was fitted with 3.0-litre or 3.3-litre 6-cylinder inline engine.
In 1978 a 3.5-litre engine was added to the range. The 3.0-litre engine was dropped in 1979, in favour of a 2.8-litre fuel-injected unit. With the withdrawal of the 3.3-litre engine in 1983, just 2 engine options remained.
From May 1982, a major upgrade was launched, with the E12 (5-series)-based chassis being replaced with the new E28 5-series platform. At the same time, a slightly smaller 3430 c.c. engine was installed, but visually there was not much difference.
The final major enhancement to the E24 range was the launch in 1983 of the M635CSi, a high-performance model, with the 282bhp M88 motor taken from the M1 coupe (essentially a mid-engined racecar).
E24 production continued with various minor upgrades until April 1989, when the all-new 8-series became BMW’s high-performance coupe.
Owned by Pat, this car was built in November 1981 and is a late example of the Series 1 version of the model, which was based on the E12 (original 5-series) chassis.
Registered to BMW Park Lane, London, on 16 March 1982, it was purchased from them on 28 May 1982 by a Mr. St. Jean of Cobham, Surrey. He remained the sole registered keeper of the car prior to Pat purchasing it in April 2015, at which time it had covered only 49,707 miles.
